We will be releasing a new Buille album on October 19th. It’s a live recording we made in Baile Mhúirne in County Cork in February and features a whole load of new music composed by myself and Caoimhín. You can pre-order it now in order to be sure of getting your copy by the release date.

My new book of tunes has just been released. It features 101 tunes that I have composed over the last 25 years. As well as 54 tunes that I have recorded myself (solo and as part of Nomos and Buille) and by the likes of Lunasa, Zoe Conway, Michael McGoldrick, Kan, Dàimh and the Poozies, there are 47 previously unpublished tunes. There are 116 pages including an introduction by Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin, photographs by myself and a discography as well as the 101 tunes. It’s available for €20 (plus shipping).

“throughother” is a new piece of music I was commissioned to write as part of my tenure as Traditional Artist in Residence at University College Cork. It was premiered in DIngle on May 1st as part of Féile na Bealtaine and will be performed again on May 22nd and 23rd in Baile Mhúirne and Cork City. The performance features myself and some great young musicians who are students of the Music Dept in UCC - Shane Keating (pipes), Breffni Molloy (fiddle) and Mairead Carey (flute) - as well as the Vanbrugh String Quartet. more details here

I’m delighted to announce that I’ve just been appointed as Traditional Artist in Residence at University College Cork. I’ll be undertaking various performances, workshops, lectures etc during the next year. The first performance will be at St Finbarr’s Cathedral on Friday November 14th with Gerry McKee, Frank Torpey, Caoimhín Vallely and Brian Morrissey. This will be focussed on tunes I have written that will be included in a new book of my compositions which will be published shortly.

My new composition “Time Flying” will have its World Premiere at Cork Opera House on March 20th. The piece was commissioned by Cork Opera House and the Crash Ensemble and will be performed by myself and the Crash Ensemble alongside music from Nico Muhly, Michael Gordon and Dave Flynn. Two days later I’ll be playing “Ó Riada Room” with the Vanbrugh Quartet at Triskel Christchurch as part of UCC’s Fuaim Festival.
On March 26th TG4 will be broadcasting “Joseph Campbell - Aisling agus Íobairt”, a documentary on the life of Belfast poet Joseph Campbell for which I composed the soundtrack.
Buille will be out on tour around Ireland at the beginning of May and we’ll be recording all the gigs for a new live album to be released this autumn.

I have a new page on Soundcloud where you can listen to and download some new recordings - https://soundcloud.com/niall-vallely

Lunasa’s new album with the RTE Concert Orchestra which features my arrangements of their music was released recently. This clip from their gig at the National Concert Hall last June will give some idea of what to expect.
